Based on a guest-artist program conceived by the now-defunct artspace gallery (where 12’s Director, Shooshie Sulaiman was previously based), 12 hosted the works of Czech artist, Milan Cais, in February 2007.

Taking the form of a three-dimensional diary, Fragments of 9 + 6 encompassed the artist’s thoughts, imaginations, and impressions during the nine months of waiting for his first-born and the first six months of its life.

Works were of a multifarious nature with photographic installations hanging alongside paintings, whilst the installation Is And Isn’t – featuring the recordings of a womb – was juxtaposed with Foetuses, an installation of leatherette objects that intermittently sprung to life with the aid of mechanical electronics.

Cais, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, is a multidisciplinary artist with an oeuvre that encompasses installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, stage design, performance, music, animation, and art direction.
